It Starts with the Packaging, Not the Printing Press

The Proofing and Prepress Stage

Once the artwork is ready, it is placed on a digital template or dieline showing the product’s printable area, folds, seams, and cut lines.

The customer normally receives a digital proof for approval before production begins. This proof should be checked carefully for spelling, logo orientation, color references, and positioning.

However, a screen proof cannot perfectly reproduce how ink will look on clear plastic, coated paper, or natural kraft material. For color-sensitive projects, buyers should ask whether a physical sample or pre-production sample is available.

How Logos Are Printed on Cups

Plastic and paper cups require different production setups.

Plastic cups may be decorated using screen printing, dry-offset printing, or other direct-printing methods. The cups are held in position while ink is applied to the curved exterior surface. The ink must then be properly dried or cured to achieve adequate adhesion.

How Bags Receive Custom Logos

Flexographic printing is commonly used for packaging such as paper and plastic bags, particularly for repeat or higher-volume orders. Screen printing may be suitable for certain simple designs and reusable bags, while digital printing can support detailed graphics and shorter production runs without conventional printing plates.

The bag material also affects the final result. A white paper bag provides a clean background, while kraft paper allows its natural brown tone to show through lighter inks. On some bags, the logo is printed before the material is cut, folded, and fitted with handles.

How Takeout Boxes Are Printed

Paperboard takeout boxes are generally printed as flat sheets before they are die-cut, folded, and glued into shape. Offset, flexographic, and digital printing can all be used for folding cartons, depending on the material, print quantity, and design requirements.

The printer must consider where folds, locks, ventilation holes, and closure tabs will appear. Important text should not cross these areas unless the design has been intentionally prepared for them.

Ink and Food-Packaging Considerations

For foodservice packaging, the complete package construction matters—not just an ink described as “food safe.”

Printing is typically placed on the non-food-contact side of the package. Manufacturers must select inks, coatings, adhesives, and substrates appropriate for the intended application. Temperature, grease exposure, condensation, and microwave use may also affect which materials and printing methods are suitable.
